Just a few weeks after we were engaged, Ken was diagnosed with cancer. One day, in the hospital, Ken was in so much pain that I couldn't bear to watch. As I walked out of his room, I saw a woman pushing a cradle down the hall.
The woman didn't say a word, but she looked at me with such warmth in her eyes that I was drawn to her and the cradle. However, as I looked down at the thin, pale child, I thought I was going to scream.
Then, suddenly, the child smiled at me - and that smile penetrated deep inside me and awakened me to a truth I desperately needed to know - for her, for me, and for Ken. She was telling me, "My body is like this, but Spirit is alive in me, and I am joyous."
I understood that although the body is temporary, Spirit within is eternal. Her smile gave me a glimpse of the eternal life that is in us all.
